Elected to Launceston City Council in 2018.
I'm ready to lead Launceston to the future we all know is waiting. Whether its continuing the job of improving our mighty waterways, protecting our greatest assets such as the Gorge and our built heritage, bringing forward true reconciliation with our strong Aboriginal community, or taking the bold steps to improve our traffic and create affordable housing, I pledge to work every day of the week for the Launceston we want.
I will always stand up and be counted for the community. I have lived and worked in Launceston since moving here with my parents in 1982 aged 16, and have always seen its potential to be unique among the regional cities of Australia. Our heritage, the natural beauty, our city's liveability, and the spectacular Tamar Valley are the things that we must capitalise on to reach the potential we all know is within reach.
I have two adult sons, and a young family with my partner Belinda. I know what it's like to work and build a life in our beautiful city, and I want the same opportunity for my children and your children. I went to university at UTAS in Newnham, and have worked for the education department, the student union, disability service providers, ABC Northern Tasmania and a Tasmanian Senator. I have also run retail small businesses in Launceston for 10 years.
I believe in our great future, but only if we take the decision to grow together as a community: provide for those who might be struggling, bring equity and opportunity to all regardless of wealth, share the benefits of our economy and reward the efforts of those who look after others.
I want to grow our economy by revitalising our CBD, enhancing our city so it becomes the choice destination for new business and workers. For this we also need to grow our housing stock with creative and sustainable housing solutions that are affordable - and Launceston Council must play a role in this.
I want to make Launceston the adventure capital of the north, the base for tourists to access the best of what Northern Tasmania has to offer; food and beverage, mountains and forests, rivers and sea, hiking and cycling.
And I want us to never lose what makes us special, our friendliness, our heritage, our strong sense of community, and our beautiful valley vistas.
